When the class had trickled across campus to the farm building, Mr. Polk informed us that he wanted us to learn about electric welding. Since this form of welding is even brighter than the other method of welding, there was no arguing about wearing eye protection -- no one wanted to go blind! One by one my male classmates took turns holding the metal rod to create the arc of welding.
I stood back, watching the boys having fun with electricity. While I was wearing the eye protection, I couldn't see anything until the rod came close enough to the other piece of metal to create the arc. Then I saw a beautiful star-like light where the metal was melting.
Looking into the helmet and through the visor, I noticed the reflection of what was behind me showing in the dark visor. A familiar little Voice began to whisper in my ear...
The life of a Christian is similar to watching electric welding. The Christian can't see ahead of him; often he can't even see the next step he is to take. As he peers into the darkness, trying to discern God's will, he sees the reflection of the past as the devil tries to distract him from seeing the light of truth. But if the Christian is patient, he will see the light of God's truth sometime.
When the star-like arc is seen, occasionally the shadow of the welder's hand can also be seen holding the clamp with the metal rod. Sometimes while the Christian is keeping the eye of faith fixed on the light of truth, he can discern the shadow of God's hand, controlling the circumstances.
Nevertheless, even when the welder's hand cannot be seen, the very existence of the electrical arc is sufficient proof that there is a hand, and a mind, in control. In the same way, even when God's hand cannot be seen, there is unmistakeable proof that He is still in perfect control.
